Elders

Meet Our Elders

Geoff Chang

Geoff and Stephanie Chang began their ministry at Hinson in September, 2010. Although he was raised in a Christian home, believing in God, it was at a youth camp that Geoff finally understood the Gospel and repented and trusted in Christ. Geoff earned his BBA from The University of Texas at Austin and his M.Div. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Geoff oversees Adult Ministries and Member Care and is passionate about shepherding well. He and Stephanie are spending their time together learning how to be godly parents to their two kids.

Jim Evernden

My wife, Terry, and I have 2 married children in the Portland area and 3 beautiful grandchildren, Julia, Maddie & Jack. My vision is seeing the practical results of servant-hearts. My favorite scripture is MICAH 6:8 "What does the Lord ask of you? To act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." My Favorite book is whatever biography of an historical figure I happen to be reading at the time. A little known fact about me is that I have windsurfed in the Indian Ocean and climbed Mt. Karisimbi.

Trent Hughes

Trent and Christianne Hughes have four children and have been members at Hinson since 2007. Trent professed faith in Christ at a young age, but came to a better understanding of the gospel in college where he repented and was baptized. Trent earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Oregon and is a financial analyst. He currently works with the Elders in administering the Benevolence Fund. Trent and Christianne love spending time with their children and are continuing to learn how to be Christ-like parents.

Michael Lawrence

Michael & Adrienne Lawrence have five children and began their ministry at Hinson in September, 2010. Michael came to faith at an early age, but never understood that the Christian life was more than salvation until he was introduced to the InterVarsity campus ministry at Duke University. After their marriage in 1990, both Michael & Adrienne earned their M.Div. degrees at Gordon-Conwell, and then Michael earned his PhD from Cambridge University in 2002. He came to us from Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington DC after serving as Associate Pastor for over 8 years. Michael loves books more than food and enjoys an eclectic mix of music. He and his family ride bikes everywhere and love outdoor activities.

Ron Marrs

Ron and his wife, Becky have been married 32 years and have 3 adult children and 2 grandchildren. Ron served for 18 months as our Interim Executive Pastor, until Michael Lawrence began his ministry with us. Ron comes with many years’ experience, both as a Youth Pastor and Executive Pastor. Ron is the Professor of Pastoral/Youth Ministry at Western Seminary.

Todd Miles

Todd Miles has been a follower of Jesus from a young age. A native of Oregon, he is married to Camille. They have six children. He has served in the past as an Elder at Hinson. Todd is an Associate Professor of Theology at Western Seminary where he teaches Theology, Hermeneutics and Ethics. Prior to working at Western Seminary, he was employed for ten years as a research engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Todd is an alumnus of Oregon State University, Western Seminary and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Todd enjoys "all things athletic", "all things Oregon State" and reading military history and biographies.

Jon Paivarinta

Jon and Elee Paivarinta have 4 children (ages 9-14), and have been married since 1995. They became members at Hinson in 1998. Jon grew up in a Christian home and attended a Christian school, but it was only after high school when he finally submitted to Christ as his King. He received a BA in Music from Portland State, and an MA in Biblical and Theological Studies from Western Seminary. Jon currently shares the teaching responsibility for the Philathian class. Jon works for UPS, while Elee home schools three of their children and cares for the occasional foster child.

Daniel Schreiner

Daniel & Ashley Schreiner moved to Portland in June, 2011 from Kentucky, when Daniel joined the Hinson Staff as Associate Pastor for Students & Families. They have three kids. Daniel accepted Christ as his Savior as a young child and was faithfully discipled as a teenager by his youth leader. At Western Kentucky University he became a leader in Campus Crusade and later served as a pastoral assistant over youth, college and missions ministries at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington DC.

Tim Shanahan

Tim & Monica Shanahan have been married 30 years, have 3 grown sons and 4 grandchildren. Tim accepted Christ as his Savior 35 years ago and joined Hinson Baptist Church in 1981. He is a mechanical engineer and is President of InSpec Design. In addition to serving our church as elder, Tim has been a member of the Finance Team and coordinated Nogales ministry trips.

Jan Verbruggen

Jan and his wife Fran have 4 children, 1 boy and 3 girls, 3 out of College and 1 still in College. Jan grew up in Belgium and came to faith when he was studying at a university in Belgium. His desire to study the Bible and know more about his faith brought him to the States. During Jan's master’s studies at Trinity he met his wife Fran and they were married in 1986. From there he went on for a Ph.D. at the Johns Hopkins University. Jan and his family lived in Belgium for 7 years, working at the Evangelische Theologische Faculteit and as a pastor. They came back to the US in 2000 to teach at Western Seminary and started to attend Hinson. Jan loves learning languages, reading books about the history of the Jews and taking students on study trips to Israel.
